Three men were arrested in Waikato after two vehicles were stolen from an Auckland home on Sunday morning.
Jenny Pham was travelling on the motorway from Auckland to Wellington when she was pulled over by police and was told someone was driving on the wrong side of the road.
Minutes later, a vehicle shot past her alongside the motorway.
“It was so scary,” she said.
The vehicle later turned over and officers arrested two people while dog units chased a third into the bush, Pham also said.
Video captured by Pham appears to show three officers approaching a man with his hands up on the side of the motorway before being arrested.
Area Commander Inspector Will Loughrin said police did not initiate a pursuit, instead a tactical approach was used.
Cordons were put in place around the area and the Eagle helicopter was deployed to observe the vehicle’s movements.
The vehicle continued across the northern Hamilton and Taupiri area.
Police managed the traffic to mitigate risk to motorists and deployed road spikes which resulted in the vehicle coming to a stop near the Taupiri Expressway on-ramp.
The offenders then ran off, however, they were taken into custody a short time later.
The three men, aged 31, 36 and 30, have been charged with a number of dishonesty and driving related offences.
They are due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Monday.
Enquiries are ongoing to locate the second vehicle.
