The slow-moving tropical low is approaching the mainland between Maroochydore and Bribie Island.
The full effects of the weather system are being felt from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland down to Coffs Harbour in New South Wales.
Alfred reached the offshore islands at midnight AEST and was downgraded to a tropical low at 6am AEST.
As this happened, severe winds weakened however the rain has not let up.
The focus has now turned to intense rainfall which could trigger dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding.
As a result, there are significant severe weather warnings and flooding warnings in place.
Today is likely to be the wettest day for south-east Queensland.
An estimated 300,000 homes are without power in Queensland while the lights are out at many more homes in New South Wales.
The damage to homes and buildings is thankfully limited due to easing winds.
So far emergency crews have carried out 29 flood rescues across the NSW Northern Rivers region.
