Transactions are coming in fast and furious in the NBA with less than an hour until the NBA Trade Deadline. One of the more intriguing deals that have been completed this afternoon is a three-team trade between the Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers.
There are a lot of moving parts as three players and four draft picks are on the move. The 76ers are acquiring forward Jalen McDaniels, a 2024 second-round pick via the New York Knicks from Charlotte and the Trail Blazers’ 2029 second-round pick.
Portland is acquiring forward Matisse Thybulle while Charlotte is landing Svi Mykhailiuk. The Hornets are also landing a 2023 second-round pick from Philadelphia, whichever is most favorable between their own, the Hawks and the Nets. They are also receiving the more favorable selection between the New Orleans Pelicans and Trail Blazers in 2027.
This is a nice deal for the 76ers, who accomplish a lot in one fell swoop. McDaniels is a nice addition to their rotation as a versatile forward who is having a breakout season. He will no doubt be an upgrade over the offensively-challenged Thybulle.

In addition to the impact McDaniels will have on the court, the 76ers also made strides monetarily. This trade gets them under the luxury tax line, which is important to franchises. This is a win in every regard for Philadelphia.
Portland acquiring Thybulle is a bit of a head-scratcher. They just landed Cam Reddish and a protected 2023 first-round pick in exchange for Josh Hart from the New York Knicks on Wednesday night. Adding Thybulle seems a bit repetitive but he should at least help them improve defensively.

Charlotte was facing the reality of losing McDaniels in free agency this summer for nothing, so they decided to get what they could for him. Two second-round picks are better than nothing and they take a flier on Mykhailiuk, who was drafted by Mitch Kupchak when he was running the Los Angeles Lakers front office.
