Expect the former president to join his running mate JD Vance in attacking Kamala Harris and the Democrats over the price increases the US economy has weathered during Joe Biden’s term. We’re going to hear from both Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance and Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential pick, Tim Walz, this afternoon, when they speak in Michigan and Colorado, respectively. You can expect the Ohio senator Vance to hit out at Democrats over inflation – which new data shows continues to decrease – and also promise to stop undocumented people from getting into the country. But all signs point to Harris and Walz having the momentum at present. Recently released polls show that the vice-president is the preferred choice of voters in several battleground states, and has fired up both the young voters that often make the difference for Democrats, and the electorate at large. We’ll see if Walz presses the case for that enthusiasm this afternoon.

Inflation became one of the biggest challenges Biden faced in his presidency, after prices shot up at rates not seen since the 1980s, driven by factors including Covid-19’s impact on global supply chains, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The president’s approval ratings fell as inflation rose, and though Biden has declined to seek re-election, his successor as the Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, appears to have the same problem.

On the heels of our historic launch, we know that the more voters hear during the month of August about the differences between Vice-President Harris’ long-standing history of delivering common-sense solutions for the American people – from her early days as a prosecutor to the present – and Donald Trump’s dangerous, extreme and out-of-touch Project 2025 agenda, the more they will know that Vice-President Harris is the only candidate fit to lead our country over the next four years. Good morning, US politics blog readers. Ever since she took over as the Democratic presidential nominee late last month, it has been apparent that Kamala Harris has the sort of momentum with voters that Joe Biden never had during his abandoned bid for a second term. This morning, the Cook Political Report released polling showing the vice-president ahead of Donald Trump or tied with him in six of the seven battleground states. It was a reversal from when they last surveyed voters in May, and found that the former president led Biden in each one. Progressive youth voter group NextGen America also found yesterday that Harris is beating Trump among voters under 35, and by a much larger margin than when Biden was in the race.

Trump says that during the time he was president, Black and Hispanic unemployment were at the “greatest drops that you’ve ever seen”.
“Every group – men, women, Hispanics, Asians, Blacks, everybody was down at a level that nobody’s ever seen,” he tells his supporters.
It’s a stretch for presidents to take credit for job creation, NPR notes:
Rates had been falling for long before Trump took office, and their declines don’t appear to have picked up speed. This implies that there’s nothing specific that Trump did to change this rate.
Trump claims that when he left the White House, the country was experiencing a “surging economy with no inflation”.
As the Wall Street Journal points out, inflation was starting to pick up toward the end of his presidency.
During the second half of 2020, the consumer price index rose at an annual rate of 3.9%. During the last six months through May, the CPI rose at a 3.4% pace.
Trump says Kamala Harris’s economic plan – which she is scheduled to unveil this week – will probably “be a copy of my plan”.
He once again brings up Harris’s laugh, which he describes as “career-threatening” and the “laugh of a crazy person”.
Trump moves on to another common GOP attack line, accusing Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor and Kamala Harris’s running mate, of having signed a bill to put “tampons in boys’ bathrooms”.
Walz supported a law that went into effect in Minnesota this year, requiring tampons in both boys’ and girls’ public school bathrooms.
Here’s the Guardian’s columnist Arwa Mahdawi on why Republicans who think ‘Tampon Tim’ is an insult are actually Walz’s best publicists:
Trump says he is giving an “intellectual speech” and moves on to the US economy, where he claims the country has “literally” “become a third-world nation”.
Trump says that he will “rapidly drive prices down” on his first day if he is re-elected to the White House and that he will “make America affordable again”.
He says we don’t hear about the American dream anymore because it’s “dead”.
Trump says everything that Kamala Harris touches “turns bad”, and claims she has made California “unlivable” and that she “broke the border” and “broke our economy”.
Trump claims that Harris “wants to be in charge of the entire US economy”, but as the Washington Post points out:
[Trump] has said he would if elected exert much more control over the Federal Reserve, while Harris has vowed to protect the independence of the central bank.
Trump says Kamala Harris went from being “totally disrespected” and “the most unpopular vice-president in the history of our country” six weeks ago, to receiving the “greatest press” now.
He says he wants to use the same artist who sketched Harris on the cover of Time magazine. “I want to find that artist,” he says.
Trump says he is going to win back the White House with a “historic landslide” and that he and his supporters are going to “take back our country”.
“We are leading the biggest political movement in the history of our country,” Trump says. “There’s never been a movement like this.”
Trump says he has some “very good” polls coming out. He thanks Dave Boliek, who is running for election for North Carolina state auditor, and says he has his endorsement.
Trump notes that Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law and co-chair of the Republican National Committee, was born and raised in North Carolina. She’s “really terrific”, he says.
Trump addresses North Carolina rally
Donald Trump has taken to the stage at the rally in Asheville, North Carolina. “A very big hello to North Carolina,” he says.
“It’s great to be back in this beautiful state” with the “proud, hard-working patriots who make our country run”, Trump tells the crowd.
You built our country. You make our country run.
