Found in North Africa, Tunisia is a fine country to travel through – its epic desertscapes contrast with sandy beaches, offering you a plethora of things to do and see. There are certain cultural aspects that you should know of before visiting this Arab country.
Religion
Almost 99% of the people in Tunisia are of the Islamic faith, so as a visitor to the country, there is a set of cultural standards that you should follow. However, Tunisians are tolerant of other religions, so you’re free to practice your own.
All Male Cafés
In Tunisia, you’ll come across two types of cafés – one for men, and one for both men and women. All-male cafés have big groups of men drinking coffee and shisha inside and women are not allowed to enter these.
Food
One can treat their taste buds to authentic Tunisian cuisine at traditional eateries or restaurants offered by the likes of The Residence Tunis. Enjoy dishes such as ‘brik’, which is a delectable pastry stuffed with tuna, egg, and parsley; ‘fricassé’, which is a savoury doughnut that brims with boiled egg, tuna, olives, and harissa.
Women’s Clothing
Due to Tunisia being an Arab country, women are expected to wear clothing that offers complete coverage such as long-sleeved blouses and long skirts or any other outfit that covers the body from shoulders up to knees. However, you have the freedom to dress however you want at your Tunis hotel.
