Ukraine has wiped out 1,160 Russian soldiers since its surprise offensive into its enemy state.
Ukrainian troops remained in Russia’s western Kursk region last night (Friday, August 9) – up to six miles over the border – as its offensive came to the end of a fourth day.
The Russian defence ministry said it was “continuing to repel” Ukraine’s military, which it claimed had lost more than 280 personnel in the past 24 hours.
But Ukraine’s military – Defense of Ukraine – says that it has wiped out 1,160 Russian troops in the last 24 hours in the deepest cross-border advance by Kyiv since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday, August 8 that Moscow must “feel” the consequences of its invasion.
Defence of Ukraine – the official page of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine – updates followers on social media platform X on casualties regularly and shared a graphic that claimed 1,160 Russian troops had been killed in the last in 24 hours.
It was accompanied by a quote from Albert Einstein which said: “Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master.
“For this reason, mastery demands all of a person.”
There have been 589,700 Russian soldiers killed at the hands of the Ukraine so far according to the Defense of Ukraine. These numbers are unconfirmed and Russia does not release up-to-date casualty figures.
An authority on the war – the Institute for the Study of War – also offered clarity on Ukraine’s location inside Russia, also on X.
Its tweet said: “NEW: Russian sources claimed on August 9 that Ukrainian forces advanced further east in Kursk Oblast but are likely no longer operating as far north or as far west as Russian sources previously claimed on August 8.”
It added: “Geolocated footage published on August 9 indicates that Ukrainian forces were recently operating west of Sudzha, within the settlement, north of Sudzha near Kazachya Loknya, and northeast of Leonidovo and in Dmitriukov.”
Images shared on social media show carnage with dozens of bodies and burned-out trucks purportedly in the Kursk region.
Ian Matveev, a Russian military expert, estimated that an entire battalion was destroyed, calling it “one of the bloodiest and most massive strikes of the entire war.”
He said: “Many people died, some of the vehicles burned to the ground. It appears that the entire column was carrying infantry.
“They had weapons, and most likely there were 3-4 companies per truck – an entire battalion destroyed. Judging by the appearance of the column, about half died.”
