A fire claimed the lives of six people, including three young children aged 6, 12, and 13, in a home located southwest of Atlanta early Monday morning, according to the local coroner’s office. The oldest victim was reported to be in their 70s.
During the incident, a Coweta County firefighter suffered minor injuries.
Out of the 11 people present in the home, five survivors were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, with some sustaining “serious injuries,” as suggested by Coweta County Fire Rescue.The fire department received the call at 4:57 am and responded to the scene just north of Newnan, Georgia.
“The first unit arrived within 9 minutes and found that over 50 percent of the home was engulfed in flames, with fire coming from the roof,” Coweta County fire officials said.
The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office expressed their condolences, saying, “Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic loss. We ask that everyone please keep the victims and their loved ones in their thoughts and prayers.”
Coweta County Fire Rescue, along with county and state fire marshals and the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating the cause of fire.
