We have activated a Weather Authority Alert for Sunday, as we continue to watch the potential for a round of severe thunderstorms, most likely in the afternoon and evening.
Prior to the Sunday system, we may also see a few severe storms Friday late afternoon and evening. Isolated damaging wind gusts and large hail would be the main threats.
We will likely see a very warm afternoon Sunday, with highs possibly near 90° and high humidity. This will set the stage for a very unstable atmosphere. A cold front approaching in the afternoon and evening should provide a trigger for storm development. Any storms that develop will have the potential for all forms of severe weather threats, including tornadoes, damaging wind, and very large hail.
With a busy holiday weekend ahead, anyone with outdoor activities planned should keep a close eye on the forecast. Make sure to have reliable ways to get warnings if outdoors, and know where to take shelter if storms threaten your area. Download the free WPSD Radar app for warnings wherever you are located. If you are headed to the lake or campground, have a NOAA weather radio on hand for a second reliable way to get warnings.
Also, remember that if you can hear thunder, you are close enough for lightning to strike. If a thunderstorm approaches, go inside a sturdy shelter and remain indoors for 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.
