Come this Saturday we will be just a week away from the transfer window closing and a long summer transfer window will be all over.
Chelsea still have some business to do, and quite a bit of it really when you add in the more outgoings that really need to be pushed through.
So with that in mind, what do we need to action in these finals days of the window in order to give ourselves the best possible chance to compete this season and future seasons?
I’m still a little concerned on the goalkeeper situation. I am still hopeful that Robert Sanchez can prove to be a suitable number one, but it’s also still a huge risk going into a new season with that as the conclusion. I’ve been vocal that we should have been prioritising a strong, in form, and proven number one all summer so that is what I’d still like us to do. But I know now that we won’t be doing that.
So what we need with the above in mind is to get a new goalkeeper in and over the line, and it looks like a move for Djorde Petrovic of New England Revolution is on the cards.
After a goalkeeper, I am also convinced that we need two more attackers. I’d be signing a versatile and creative attacking midfielder who can operate wide or centrally. And I’d also be signing a target man striker. Aleksander Mitrovic would have been ideal.
Not necessarily to come in and start over Nicolas Jackson, because I like Jackson and think he will become very good. But just to have as an option to either come on as a sub in games when we need a different profile, or to play as well as Jackson.
I don’t think Jackson is as big a threat when playing against a deep low block and he thrives when the game is more open and there is a higher defensive line. But him running off a target man could be super useful, or even playing as a second striker or out wide, with a target man or true number 9 ahead of him.
I know it’s not as easy as just going around and picking these perfect options that I have mentioned above. And of course we do have to make sure that if we are making these attacking signings that they have to be spot on and the right profiles. It’s not my job to find those names, but we do have people at the club who’s job it is to find these names.
That is what I would go for in terms of arrivals in these last days of the window, and then of course, we all know that we still need to sort out some more sales.
Mauricio Pochettino wants a squad of 22/23 so again, IF we make those signings above then clearly more players will need to be moved on, so some big decisions will need to be made there. Again, that’s on Pochettino and the decision makers to make those tough choices.
But the reality is for me is that our attack looks one or two players short and we lack players who can make things happen, thread a pass, and most importantly, get the damn ball in the net.
Raheem Sterling was great on Sunday but we all know how inconsistent and frustrating that he CAN be. Noni Madueke is a real threat but still lacks the quality in the final third/final ball/move. Mykhailo Mudryk is still just not doing it yet.
Jackson I mentioned above. Carney Chukwuemeka is now injured as well as Christopher Nkunku, and for me, Conor Gallagher is not an attacking midfielder he is an 8. Mason Burstow is not there yet either, and none of us know what condition/form Armando Broja will return in.
So that is what I believe needs addressing before the window is out, lets see what happens.
