Nutritionist Elena Solomatina named beer among the foods and drinks that can cause a very sharp jump in blood sugar levels.
Solomatina warned in an interview for MedikForum.ru that blood sugar rises significantly after drinking any sugary carbonated drinks. Their carbon dioxide irritates the mucous membrane, contributing to the rapid penetration of glucose into the blood. The biggest spike in blood sugar occurs when you drink soda on an empty stomach.
In addition, immediately a very sharp jump in blood sugar is caused by foods that have a high glycemic index, containing high concentrations of refined carbohydrates. Among such products are a variety of sweets, muffins, pastries and products made from white flour of the highest grade.
“The combination of white flour with sugar increases blood glucose levels especially sharply.”
Unexpectedly, nutritionist Solomatina called beer seriously raising blood sugar.
“A bitter product with a high glycemic index, such as beer, can also increase sugar,” the doctor said in a comment to Izvestia.
For better blood sugar control, Elena Solomatina advised eating unsweetened vegetables that are high in fiber and minerals, such as celery or leafy green vegetables.
