TL;DR
- WhatsApp is introducing a new Call Links feature.
- It’ll allow users to create and share links to WhatsApp video calls.
- The option will roll out to WhatsApp users in the coming weeks.
WhatsApp is debuting a new feature called Call Links. As the name suggests, it allows users to create and share links for pre-arranged WhatsApp video calls.
Up until now, users could only add their contacts to ongoing video calls or initiate video calls from pre-made groups.
The new feature makes it easy for anyone to join a WhatsApp video call by simply accessing the shared link. You can even share a WhatsApp Call Link with someone who is not on your contacts list.
WhatsApp users will be able to add the link to an invite or send it in a chat.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to Facebook to announce that the Call Links feature will come to the platform starting this week. He added that the company is also testing secure, encrypted video calling for up to 32 people.
If you’re looking forward to WhatsApp’s new Call Link feature, you’ll have to keep checking for an update to your app in the coming days.
It’s unclear what protections are in place for these shared video call links, but we’re guessing WhatsApp will share those details once the feature is live.
