Tennessee Director of Swimming & Diving Matt Kredich has agreed to a contract extension, Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White announced Thursday. Kredich’s new deal runs through April of 2027.
“I can’t say enough positive things about the state of Tennessee swimming & diving under Matt’s leadership,” White said. “Two SEC championships in the last three years speak volumes to what he’s built. Matt has cemented the Lady Vols as a perennial top-10 program in the country, and the men’s program is showing impressive progress as he and his staff have added some truly world-class talent to that roster. I look forward to watching both programs continue to excel at the highest levels.”
During Kredich’s tenure at Tennessee, the three-time SEC Coach of the Year guided the Lady Vols to their first-ever SEC Championship in 2020 and then led the program to its second conference title in 2022. During the men’s 2022 SEC Championships, he guided the Volunteers to a second-place finish, which marked their highest finish since 2001.
Since 2005-06, Kredich has coached Tennessee student-athletes to a combined 76 SEC and eight NCAA individual titles. The two programs have achieved a comprehensive total of 627 All-American certificates under his guidance.
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been coaching at Tennessee for 17 years, to work with all of the outstanding people – athletes, coaches and staff – that have helped build this culture and this program, and I’m thrilled at the prospect of being here for at least another five years,” Kredich said. “The support that our past and current administration has given to Tennessee swimming and diving has been essential to our growing success, and the support shown by Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White, Chancellor Donde Plowman and President Randy Boyd going forward is exactly what we need to continue to build a culture that relentlessly pursues and competes for championships at every level. It truly is great to be a Tennessee Vol.”
Over the last six seasons, Tennessee’s women have finished fourth or better in the SEC every season, and the men have finished sixth or better every year during that span, including three years inside the top three. At the NCAA Championships, the Lady Vols currently own a streak of four straight top-10 finishes, while the Vols have placed inside the top 20 at nine straight NCAA meets.
Bringing in some of the best talent in the world, Kredich has coached 13 Olympians who competed at Tennessee, including two medalists. In addition, Kredich and his staff have trained numerous athletes who qualified for the Olympics after their collegiate careers.
Tennessee student-athletes have excelled in the classroom with Kredich at the helm. Since 2010, the Lady Vols boast 60 first-team Scholar All-Americans and 80 total honorees. As a program, the women have earned CSCAA Scholar All-American Team recognition for 11 consecutive seasons. On the men’s side, a total of 54 Vols received Scholar All-American status, with 31 recognized on the first team, since 2012-13. The program has been named to the Scholar All-American Team list during 16 of the 17 semesters under Kredich.
With the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign, Kredich finished his 17th season on Rocky Top and 10th as head of the men’s and women’s programs.
