A woman has been arrested after allegedly setting a fire on a forest service road in the Port Alberni area.
At about 6 p.m. Tuesday, a local off-duty RCMP officer spotted a fire in a forested area near the Stirling Arm Forest Service Road and Canal Main Forest Service Road.
Officers found a suspect believed to be responsible for the fire, a 27-year-old woman. She is being held in custody and a report will be forwarded to Crown counsel for consideration of charges.
The fire was about 5,000 square metres, about the size of a football field, and is being held, said RCMP Cpl. Alex Bérubé in a statement on Wednesday.
Campfires and open burning are restricted across the province because of heat and drought.
Anyone with information is asked to call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.
