A proposed new biennial global rugby championship would kill off any idea of South Africa joining the Six Nations, according to sources close to the talks.
The Times yesterday revealed detailed plans for a new cross-hemisphere Test competition that would include matches in July and November, culminating in a grand final and relegation play-offs. The competition is slated to launch in full in 2026 and would be held in even-numbered years, to avoid clashing with the World Cup and the British & Irish Lions tours.
Leading rugby executives were locked in discussions in Dublin last night. World Rugby wants a general commitment from the major unions this week, with a view to a formal vote being held in November.
