Zaya Wade’s interest in high fashion started early. The 15-year-old admitted in a recent interview that she used to wear her stepmother’s high heels as a kid.
“When I was a kid, I used to take her heels and catwalk in them, which has clearly paid off, but I don’t do that anymore,” Zaya said in an interview with InStyle. The teen continues on in the interview to credit Gabrielle Union as being a major fashion influence in her life.
Zaya is quickly establishing herself as a fashion icon. She has modeled for some of the most exclusive brands in the industry such as Miu Miu and Tiffany’s. The talented teen recently covered Dazed magazine, opening up even more about the evolution of her love of fashion.
“My relationship with fashion has really evolved over the years,” Wade said to Dazed in her interview.
She continued, “It started out as, ‘Oh, my parents are super fashionable, and I want to dress up and be as fashionable as them.’ But, as time has passed and I’ve become more integrated into the fashion world, it’s become a really important part of expressing myself and my identity. Whether I’m wearing a dress for winter formal or wearing a suit for a shoot, it’s just a way to level up my iconic-ness, I feel.”
If you remember, Zaya came out as transgender in 2020. She finally was granted her official name change and gender assignment by a Los Angeles county judge last month. Throughout it all, the teen has been grateful to have the support of her parents.
“They are such a giant support system and have always been there for me. No matter what happens, I feel strongest when I’m with them.”
She added that she feels the strongest and most empowered “when my family surrounds me.”
Zaya is truly becoming an exceptional young person and is already an inspiration and role model for so many. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for this incredible young woman!
