5 Reasons to Include Gold in Your Retirement Strategy (and 1 Reason to Be Careful)

Gold hit a record near $5,600 an ounce in late January 2026. Through the late summer it traded closer to $4,400, off the peak but still far above where it sat a year earlier.

The price swings hard. The pitch swings harder. The question worth asking is what gold actually does in a retirement portfolio, and whether it belongs in yours.

Here are five reasons it might, and one reason to pause before you buy.

1. Central banks cannot get enough of it

A record 45% of central banks expect to add gold to their own reserves over the next year, according to the World Gold Council’s 2026 survey, and 89% expect global official holdings to keep rising.

Central banks have bought roughly 1,000 tonnes a year for four straight years, double the pace of the previous decade, and gold has now passed U.S. Treasuries to become the world’s largest reserve asset. When the institutions that manage national wealth treat gold as a core holding, it says something about how they view the risks ahead.

2. It can hold value when the dollar weakens

Over time, inflation eats into what a dollar can buy. That tax lands hardest on anyone living off a fixed pool of savings.

Gold is priced in dollars, so a weaker dollar often means it takes more of them to buy the same ounce. World Gold Council research describes gold as a better long-term inflation hedge than a short-term one, and over decades it has broadly held its purchasing power while paper currencies have lost theirs.

For a retiree watching grocery and medical costs climb, that can help manage inflation risk.

3. It moves independently of your stocks

The point of owning gold is not that it always goes up. It is that it tends to hold its ground when the rest of your portfolio falls.

Stocks and bonds can drop together, as they did in 2022. Gold’s correlation with equities has historically turned more negative during severe selloffs, and a World Gold Council analysis found gold’s performance stayed positive through both the 2022 and 2025 equity pullbacks.

That cushioning matters most in the years around retirement, when a sharp drop while you are drawing down savings can do lasting damage.

4. It is one hedge against a rising debt pile

The national debt topped $40 trillion in 2026, the first time it has ever done so. Interest on that debt now runs around a trillion dollars a year, roughly what the government spends on defense.

No one agrees on where that trajectory leads, but the pressures are real. Large deficits, heavy government borrowing and uncertainty about future inflation are among the forces that tend to increase demand for gold, one of the oldest hedges against a currency losing value.

5. You can sell it when you need to

Gold is one of the most liquid assets in the world, with a deep global market trading hundreds of billions of dollars a day. Investors have several ways to buy and sell it, including bullion, coins and exchange-traded funds.

It also carries no counterparty risk. A bond depends on an issuer making good on its promise to pay. Gold is nobody’s promise, which gives it a different risk profile from many assets in a typical retirement account.

When you should pause

Gold produces no cash flow. No dividend, no interest, no rent. The real question is not whether gold is good. It is how much belongs in your specific mix, given your income needs, your timeline and everything else you own.

If you have over $100,000 in savings, consider getting advice from a pro before adding gold into the mix. SmartAsset offers a free service that matches you to a vetted, fiduciary advisor in under five minutes.

If gold has a place in your portfolio, the next question is how to hold it. Anthem Gold Group is committed to helping investors protect their wealth and retirement with physical precious metals. It offers gold, silver, platinum and palladium coins and bars delivered directly to your home. Plus, enjoy up to $25,000 in complimentary gold and silver, along with waived IRA storage fees for up to 10 years.

Even Brian Kilmeade from Fox News trusts Anthem Gold to protect your cash and retirement accounts with physical gold and silver. Anthem Gold’s minimum to get started is $10,000. Why not take a look right now?
