George Magoha Insists CBC Is Best Programme for Kenya amid Protests: “You Can Create Jobs”

• Magoha stated that learners who had gone through CBC were growing their talents which they would use to establish companies
• The CS said there was no need to learn to get to university only to be jobless, whereas talents could be exploited at a young age

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has reiterated his support for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

During the 94th Kenya Music Festival launch at Kisumu Girls High School on Monday, September 19, Magoha stated that the curriculum was the solution to unemployment in the country.

The CS argued that rather than reading to pass exams and pursue courses in University, CBC provides learners with the opportunity to exploit their talents.

He explained that through the curriculum, learners who had gone to university would eventually get employed by the talented ones.

“You don’t have to say I pass to go to university. You go and create a company and employ those who went to university. And employ many of them because you will be talented. That is the life that our children must consider,” said the Education CS.

Jobless for twenty years

Magoha highlighted the plight most graduates across the country have had to contend with after completing their courses.

The CS added that it was illogical to do all the learning only to go from one interview to the next in search of jobs.

“Rather than saying let me pass well so that I go to the university, get a certificate, stay for twenty years to get a job. I think that is a bit stupid,” added Magoha.

William Ruto changes mind on CBC

As TUKO.co.ke reported, Ruto softened his tough stance regarding the contentious CBC.

Initially, Ruto had vowed to scrap the education system if elected the president, arguing that it was confusing and costly to ordinary Kenyans.

However, speaking at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa while launching his education blueprint, Ruto made a u-turn saying the Kenya Kwanza team fully supports CBC.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leader praised the system saying it had transformed the education system from exam based to skills, competence, and value-based.

“I want to say from the onset that the graduation that has taken place from the knowledge and exam-based education to know knowledge, competence, skills-based and value is the right trajectory. It is very important to understand that as Kenya Kwanza we support the progression from what we had as the exam-based format only to the new skills and knowledge,” said Ruto.
