Overview

During hatching season, these intelligent creatures swim across the Indian Ocean and come ashore to lay their eggs. Due to poaching and attacks from other animals, hatcheries are now set up along the coast to protect these threatened species.

How to reach

If you are staying in the South, perhaps at The Beach House or a similar rest, you are able to drive along the coast and find a registered sea turtle hatchery. There are many hatcheries along the road from Colombo to Galle.

Best time to visit

Every year from May to September, there will be many female sea turtles coming to shore to dig up the sand and make a nest for their eggs. Even at a hatchery, it is important to respect the animals and not touch them or feed them

A few tips

Search for a luxury villa offer in Mirissa if you are travelling to the South. You will find that most hotels and resorts in the South offer discounts from April to September. Remember to support a hatchery that is genuinely helping animals.
