Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge has broken the record for most home runs hit in a single season by an American League player.
Judge hit his 62nd home run of the season Tuesday night off of Jesus Tinoco in a game against the Texas Rangers.
Former Yankee Roger Maris previously held the American League record, hitting 61 home runs in 1961.
Three National League players – Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa – have hit more than 62 home runs in a season. Bonds holds the MLB record of 73 home runs, which he set in 2001. McGwire hit 70 home runs in 1998 and 65 in 1999. Sosa hit 66 in 1998 and 63 in 1999.
The Yankees’ regular season ends on Wednesday with a game against the Rangers. They have already clinched the AL East division title and a first-round bye in the American League postseason
