US president Joe Biden on signed Friday an executive order to protect personal data transfers between the EU and the US — in response to the European court’s concerns regarding surveillance. In 2020, the European Court of Justice ruled that the so-called Privacy Shield was invalid because it failed to protect Europeans’ personal data. Its predecessor, the “Safe Harbour” agreement, was also turned down by the court in 2015.
