Former Turkana governor Josphat Nanok has been appointed the State House comptroller in President William Ruto’s administration.

The president’s loyalty was tested when he had to go through a balancing act of appointing a section of his cronies to the Cabinet to solidify an operational government.

He was forced to leave out others as he charted a way forward for his hustler government.

Among those who were left behind was the immediate former Turkana governor Josphat Nanok.

In the latest appointments, Nanok was appointed the State House comptroller, while Felix Koskei will now take up the Chief of Staff role initially handled by Davis Chirchir.

Nanok broke out with Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party leader Raila Odinga and backed William Ruto’s bid in the run-up to the August 9 General Election.

Roles of State House Comptroller

The role of a State House Comptroller has, for a long time, remained a misery to many Kenyans.

1. The new comptroller will monitor economic trends, gauge the impacts of previous governments and weigh other pertinent issues, and then write a report to the president.
2. The comptroller’s office develops and manages statewide contracts providing goods and services for state agencies and local governments.
3. The comptroller’s office houses the state treasury, which holds the state’s money, processes state payments to vendors and employees and deposits revenue received from state agencies.
4. Establish and uphold accounting and reporting procedures for state government.
5. The tax collection function also lies squarely on the docket of the State House comptroller

Ruto unveils Cabinet

The president unveiled his Cabinet on September 28 and simultaneously created the position of the prime Cabinet secretary, which he gave to Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi.

When ANC joined Kenya Kwanza Alliance, Musalia became Ruto’s co-principal.

Ruto appointed Kithure Kindiki as Interior CS, Njuguna Ndungu as the CS for Treasury, Aisha Jumwa (Public Service and Gender CS), Aden Duale (Defence CS), Wahome (Water, Sanitation and Irrigation CS), and Alfred Mutua as Foreign Affairs CS.

Former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi was appointed as the Attorney General, while Moses Kuria now becomes the new Trade, Investment and Industry CS.

Kenyans expected the Commander in Chief to name Nanok as the Cabinet Secretary for any ministry but the least ended without hearing his name.
