Reuben Kigame Asks Gov’t to Buy Maize from North Rift Farmers to Feed Starving Kenyans

Former presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame has urged the government to buy maize harvest from farmers in the North Rift region to remedy the ongoing famine and drought situation.

Kigame observed that it was the best time for the government to buy maize from the farmers who were just from harvesting season.

According to the gospel artiste-turned-politician, there is no need for the government to import maize while farmers have it, adding that Kenya’s problem is distribution,

“Wakati huu ndio mzuri kwa serikali yetu kununua yale mahindi yote yako North Rift. Wameharvest hivi karibuni. Wakulima wako na mahindi. Badala ya kutoa mahindi uko nje, naomba serikali inunue hayo mahindi, inunue vyakula ambavyo viko kwa sababu shida yetu siyo kukosa chakula kabisa, ni distribution (This is the best time for the government to buy all the maize harvested recently by farmers from North Rift. Instead of importing maize let them buy these and anything that is food because our problem is not lack of food but distribution),”said the evangelist.

Worst drought in 40 years

The evangelist noted Kenya was experiencing the worst drought in four decades and that animals were dying due to a lack of food in various regions.

He lamented at a situation he said was brought to his attention that some parents got their children drunk so they could sleep and forget the pain due to hunger.

Kigame called on Kenyans to show their humanitarian side and help their neighbours during the troubling times.

William Ruto flags relief food

Days after his inauguration, President William Ruto, on Monday, September 26, flagged off truckloads of 20,000 bags of rice, and 20,000 bags of beans, among other household products, to counties stricken by drought.

Ruto said that his manifesto would build a basis on the drought issues to ensure food security is rolled out in the country.

He pleaded with counties to adjust their budgets to ensure they exhaustively address drought and famine in the devolved units.
