Kenya Exports Over 2,900 Live Animals to Oman as Drought Bites

• The animals left the Lamu Port to the Port of Salahah aboard MV Banyas 1, that’s designed to carry livestock
• The animals expected to reach Oman in a week’s time are 663 camels, 375 bulls, 867 sheep and 1,050 goats

Kenya has exported 2,955 live animals to Oman amid the ongoing drought.

The animals left the Lamu Port to the Port of Salahah aboard MV Banyas 1, that’s designed to carry livestock.

The animals expected to reach Oman in a week’s time are 663 camels, 375 bulls, 867 sheep and 1,050 goats.

Lamu Port cargo operations manager Peter Masinde said the country also exported 2,491 bags of hay and silage to the Middle East country.

“MV Banyas 1 left Lamu Port for Oman on Saturday at 2 pm. We expect the ship to dock at the Port of Salalah in Oman within a span of six to seven days,” Daily Nation quoted Masinde.

Another shipment

In the second transhipment, Masinde revealed that over 7,000 livestock would be exported to the Arabian country.

These include 6,000 goats and sheep, 300 bulls and 1,000 camels, The East African reported.

The animals are assembled from Northern Kenyan counties facing severe drought.

Over 4m Kenyans face starvation

Over four million Kenyans in more than 20 counties in Kenya are staring at starvation as the meteorological department reports hot and dry weather conditions coupled with five consecutive failed rain seasons.

The government had 23 counties on high alert as far as drought was concerned.

The Kenya Red Cross, which has been part of the relief efforts, has classified counties undergoing drought into two categories those on alert and those on alarm.

According to the Red Cross, the counties at the alert stage include Embu, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Meru, Narok, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Kwale and Kilifi.

Those at the alarm stage include Isiolo, Mandera, Samburu, Kajiado, Tharaka Nithi, Turkana, Wajir, Laikipia, Tana River and Marsabit.

Kenya to receive relief food from Ukraine

Kenya is among the countries set to benefit from 60 ships of relief food from Ukraine.

Other countries are Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Congo and Yemen.

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the initiative aimed at helping “countries the most struck by the food crisis”.
