Why This Year’s KCPE Exam Candidates Were Not Ranked

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Wednesday broke the norm for national examinations results where the top candidates and schools are ranked.
According to the CS, the Ministry of Education will no longer announce the top candidates in national examinations in a bid to eliminate unhealthy competition.
The CS said the move not to rank top candidates followed an agreement with president William Ruto.
“Going forward, even for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) which we’ll release next month, there’ll be no ranking. It introduces unnecessary competition, which isn’t necessarily the case when there’s an instrument of measurement,” Mr. Machogu said.
While announcing the results on Wednesday at Mtihani house in Nairobi, Machogu only announced that the top candidate had scored 431 marks.
Later, the Media managed to track the two top candidates both from the Westen part of Kenya. The two were Lewis Omondi Otieno (St Peter’s Mumias Boys Primary School) and Robinson Makokha Fwaro (Christ the King Primary School Bungoma).
The CS said the Grade 6 pupils will not be ranked but their reports will be uploaded on the Knec schools portal. According to Machogu, the report will show the learner’s areas of strength and where they need to improve.
On his part, the chair of the Kenya Private Schools Association, Mr. Charles Ochome condemned the move arguing that failing to rank candidates will encourage laziness among teachers and learners.
“It’ll make the children not panic and bring sobriety to the sector. However, as humans, we want to know how we compare with others. It’s like athletics. How can someone train hard when they know that they will go into a race and not be ranked?” Ochome asked.
More than 1.2 million pupils sat for KCPE. This is the highest number that the examination has ever seen, but that is not surprising because that number grows every other year.
