Seyfried, who was nominated alongside George & Tammy’s Jessica Chastain, Inventing Anna’s Julia Garner, Pam & Tommy’s Lily James and Gaslit’s Julia Roberts, later accepted her award on Instagram. “I had to miss it because I am working on something that is magic, and it’s musical,” she began, “so I’m finally getting to do something that I’ve never really done.” Considering Seyfried has already starred in two Mamma Mia films, as well as 2012’s big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables, sequels to those projects wouldn’t be breaking new territory. “That’s all I can really say about it,” she continued. “Hopefully more soon, but it’s a lot of work. It’s more fun, and it’s been a great night.” (Vanity Fair has reached out to Seyfried’s rep to see if any further explanation is in fact possible.)
The Emmy winner has long made her musical aspirations known. Before she expertly danced as an awkward Elizabeth Holmes to Lil Wayne’s “How to Love”, Seyfried confessed to “campaigning for Wicked for five years,” going so far as to send the film’s director Jon M. Chu a recording of herself singing “Popular,” Glinda the Good Witch’s signature song. “I’ve never been more ready to hit those notes,” she insisted, although Ariana Grande would ultimately land herself in the character’s trademark bubble.
As for the visions of Mamma Mia 3 that dance in our heads, the idea hasn’t slipped through Seyfried’s fingers just yet. “I hope we do another one, but you know, no one’s talking to me,” she told Variety last year. “I know if you ask any of the others they’ll be like, ‘Sure, but it’s not going to happen.’ But then that’s what we said about the second one, and it was better than the first one!” Until then, Seyfried will be dusting off her song-and-dance skills for something new.
