Other interesting first round matchups on the mens side:
(1) Rafael Nadal v Jack Draper | Not just because it involves Rafa as top seed. This is no easy match for Nadal. Draper is a strong up-and-comer and has been playing well in the Adelaide International. He beat Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) earlier today and will play Kwon Soon-woo in the semis tomorrow.
Kyle Edmund v (15) Jannik Sinner | Edmund is a former AO semi-finalist, and missed last year’s tournament with a chronic knee injury. Sinner made the quarters at last year’s Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, and picked up a knee injury in the fourth round at Roland Garros against Audrey Rublev.
(5) Andrey Rublev v Dominic Thiem | Rublev was knocked out of the Adelaide International yesterday by Thanasi Kokkinakis, but is still the World No.6. Dominic Thiem on the other hand picked up a wrist injury at a tournament in Mallorca, which took him out of the rest of the 2021. He then missed massive chunks of the 2022 tour, and fell out of the top-300. He was given a wildcard for this year’s AO.
