Kitui County Assembly has in the 2022/23 financial year increased the bursary allocation to Sh 120 million to cope with the large numbers of needy learners in the county.
Kitui governor Dr Julius Malombe, while speaking at Mutonguni in Kitui West constituency said the increment from the previous Sh.40 million was meant to support more vulnerable learners to ensure they don’t drop out of school for lack of school fees in a wider goal of improving education standards in the County.
The programme dubbed “pro-poor” was mooted by the governor during his first term in office and targets students in secondary schools, vocational training centers, colleges and universities.
Governor Malombe noted that projects underscored in his campaign manifesto included improvement of education standards.
The governor also assured residents that his administration will embark on an ambitious masterplan to curb water scarcity in the county through construction of 60 sand dams per ward that would be a sustainable medium- and long-term plan to address perennial hunger in the county.
“The plan is to build sand dams in all the wards as jointly mapped by experts from Southern Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) and the county government of Kitui,” he added.
He restated his commitment to deliver on his election pledges and improve lives of the residents in the third term of devolution through implementation of different projects in areas of healthcare, irrigation, education, road infrastructure and youth development among other growth frontiers as indicated in his county development plan.
