An Australian Open final berth for Tommy Paul would be a “beautiful” occasion for the American and former childhood rival Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The Greek tennis ace beat Karen Khachanov in today’s first semi-final, winning 7-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to set up a final with either Paul or his opponent Novak Djokovic.
For Tsitsipas, the prospect of a finale with Paul carries a lot of sentimental weight.
“A player of my generation,” Tsitsipas told Jim Courier courtside.
“I grew up playing with Tommy in juniors categories. We played each other a lot of times in juniors.
“It’s beautiful to see him come from behind and be able to play those semis in grand slam events.
“It brings back memories, for sure.”
Paul will have to overcome the odds to make it through to the final with Djokovic the red-hot favourite to make it through to the final at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.
