Aryna Sabalenka defeated Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final to emerge as the champion of the tournament for the first time in her career. The win also marked a first major title for the fifth seeded Belarusian star.
Having made their respective ways into the final, the pair of heavy-hitters took to the center court at the Rod Laver Arena aiming to win the Australian Open for the first time. Rybakina won the Wimbledon title in 2022 and was looking for a second major crown.
Sabalenka had not dropped a set in ten games this year but was quickly made to know the mettle of her opponent as she lost the first set 4-6 to Rybakina. The Kazakhstani star took the game to Sabalenka, laying an early marker.
Sabalenka recovered well to take the second set 6-3 despite the best efforts of her opponent. She then proceeded to win the third set 6-4 to seal a 4-6 6-3 6-4 comeback win, ensuring that she remains undefeated since October 2022.
