Socceroo Riley McGree has continued his tremendous form for promotion-pushing Middlesbrough, scoring the final goal in their 3-1 win over QPR in the Championship.
A second-half brace from the Championship’s top scorer Chuba Akpom helped make it five wins in a row for Michael Carrick’s side on Saturday as Boro seek to get back into the Premier League.
Akpom moved to 20 goals for the season and although Ilias Chair was on target late on for Rangers, Boro wrapped up the points as McGree hammered home from close range in stoppage time.
Involved in all of Boro’s good work, McGree also hit the post soon after the break, his shot at the end of a free-flowing counter-attack brilliantly turned onto the post by Rangers keeper Seny Dieng.
McGree was also awarded a penalty after going down under the challenge of Tim Iroegbunam. Akpom had his spot kick saved by Dieng, but the striker was on hand to turn home the rebound.
Middlesbrough are in third place, just four points behind second-placed Sheffield United, with Burnley the runaway leaders, still 11 points ahead of the field after their 1-0 win at Luton.
Vincent Kompany’s leaders broke the deadlock with 12 minutes left when Ashley Barnes converted a penalty after handball by Gabriel Osho.
Sheffield United lost ground, losing 3-2 in the early kick-off at Millwall, for whom Tom Bradshaw hit a hat-trick.
