The top two teams in Ligue 1 clash as Paris Saint-Germain meet Marseille in the French capital.
As PSG hold a gaping 12-point lead atop the table with seven matches remaining, Mauricio Pochettino’s side can all but ensure the title is theirs with a win.
Despite that, the pressure is all on Marseille in this match. PSG are comfortable, with little to play for the rest of the season, but the battle is fierce below them. Marseille hold a three-point advantage over third-place Rennes, who sit a further two points above fourth-place Nice, with Strasborg another single point behind.
The visitors must secure a result to keep a stranglehold on their Champions League position, while defeat would leave Marseille looking over their shoulder.
A result is by no means out of the question for Jorge Sampaoli’s men, who ground out a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture back in October. Still, Marseille have not won at Parc des Princes since November of 2011, leaving nearly a 10-year drought.

Goals:
12th min — PSG — Neymar
31st min — OM — Duje Caleta-Car
45+4 min — PSG — Kylian Mbappe (pen)
All listed times Eastern
55th min: Neymar goes into the book for a foul on Guendouzi and absolutely loses his mind at the referee’s decision. The replay shows that the Brazilian threw a shoulder into Guendouzi’s chest, but it wasn’t at all violent and Guendouzi went down very softly. This is the second time that Guendouzi has drawn a very soft yellow, and Neymar continues to plead his case to the referee, now on a yellow card.
54th min: The start of the second half has been a midfield battle clogged up by Marseille. Both teams have had half-chances, but neither side able to find a shot. Harit has been dangerous in moments for the visitors, getting into a tussle with Neymar.
46th min: The second half is under way. Marseille has made a surprising change, taking off the spunky Cengiz Under, with Amine Harit coming on. Not seconds on the field, Harit’s pace draws a foul and a yellow card given to Idrissa Gueye.
In a worry for PSG, Nuno Mendes is on the ground and receiving treatment. Nuno looks to be in a lot of pain as he talks to the training staff. He slowly picks himself up, and looks like he will try to stay on, as Pochettino will have to make a decision between him or Juan Bernat.
HALFTIME: PSG 2-1 Marseille
Marseille had defended quite well throughout much of that first half and was in good position going into the break, but PSG poured it on right before the break and was rewarded. That penalty is unfortunate for Marseille, but also the right call.
Marseille technically held 53 percent possession through the first half and out-passed PSG, but it certainly didn’t feel like that. PSG finished with seven shots to Marseille’s one, and Dimitri Payet was invisible despite his 33 touches. Marseille has work to do to achieve a result.
8 – Neymar has scored 8 goals in Ligue 1 in 2022, more than any other foreign player. It’s only one fewer than his tally in 2021 (9). Come-back. #PSGOM pic.twitter.com/AENLVJKVNl

7 – Kylian Mbappé has scored 7 goals in the Classique in Ligue 1, no other player has done better in the competition. Rivalry. #PSGOM pic.twitter.com/Fejy0gTq9o

45+4 min: GOAL, PSG! Neymar won it, but it’s Kylian Mbappe to step up and take the spot-kick. He hasn’t missed a penalty in Ligue 1 play since the 2018-19 season, and he buries a screamer that leaves Lopez — who guessed correctly — with no chance. PSG has a great push of momentum right before the half.

45+1 min: PENALTY, PSG! Yet again, Neymar is troubling the Marseille penalty area. The Brazilian chips in a delivery for a teammate from the top of the box, and his ball hits the elbow of a defender. Neymar screams for a penalty but the referee says no. Moments later Messi is fed through on goal and puts the ball into the back of the net, but he’s well offside and the flag goes up.
VAR is taking a look at the handball shout. It looks very bad for Marseille. The question is not just whether it’s a foul, but also the defender Valentin Rongier is in the penalty area or on the line…PENALTY! The referee has probably made the correct call here, as Rongier’s arm was decently outstretched.
44th min: CHANCE, PSG! Neymar is clearly offside as he’s fed in by Messi and the flag is up, but Pau Lopez didn’t know that, and the Marseille goalkeeper made a fabulous double save on the Brazilian. PSG pouring on the pressure here at the end of the half.
41st min: CHANCE, PSG! How did that one squirt through?!? Nuno is sprung down the left and cuts back to Messi in the area, and despite Messi being blanketed by defenders, the ball somehow ends up rolling over the goal mouth inside the near post. It’s unclear if that went off Messi or the defender on its way in.
Nevertheless, the offside flag is up and it won’t count. What a weird opportunity.

38th min: CHANCE, PSG! Excellent work between Neymar and Kylian Mbappe down the left, but Mbappe puts his one-touch effort just wide of the near post. It looked to have maybe clipped a defender on its way out but the referee says goal kick.
Moments later PSG comes close again — this one would have been stunning — as Mbappe back-heels to Neymar who volleys to Messi, but the shot is scuffed and goes wide right.
34th min: CHANCE, PSG! A deep free-kick by Neymar is a pacey one aiming for the near post, but Pau Lopez gets down low to make an acrobatic save.

31st min: GOAL! Marseille! The visitors have their big moment, and we’re level! A good attacking spell earns a corner off a Marquinhos clear, and on the set-piece delivery, Gianluigi Donnarumma is, once again, the guilty party. The Italian tried to collect the delivery but spilled it and fell to the ground, and the ball ping-ponged around the goal mouth to towering Marseille center-back Duje Caleta-Car who tapped in on the doorstep.
Donnarumma has made an insane amount of mistakes over the past few weeks, and it’s a head-scratcher that Keylor Navas cannot get a game in net.

28th min: Marseille with a spell of possession and Marquinhos is forced to clear from a dangerous giveaway in the PSG penalty area. It’s a good moment for the visitors but comes to nothing.
22nd min: Mateo Guendouzi has his pocket picked and screams at the referee, but it was a clean tackle. As PSG breaks, Lionel Messi is fouled outside the top of the penalty area and Gerson is the second player into the referee’s book. Messi puts his free-kick opportunity miles over the bar, not close to threatening the net.
The card means Gerson will miss the next Ligue 1 match against Lyon.
20th min: CHANCE, PSG! HUGE MISS by Kylian Mbappe. Danilo feeds the French superstar through all by himself, but one-on-one with Lopez, Mbappe sends the chance wide left. The flag went up after the play, but it was extremely tight and VAR could have had a say.

17th min: Marco Verratti gets an early yellow card, unluckily so as he falls and barely clips Mateo Guendouzi’s heels on the way down, but the former Arsenal midfielder feels the contact and takes the chance to go down. It gets the PSG man a booking.
16th min: After mentioning Verratti being (relatively) locked down, now it’s time to look the other way. Dimitri Payet, the Marseille talisman, has just five touches through 15+ minutes. Almost invisible so far early in this match. As Marseille gets more desperate, his involvement will increase, but at the moment, Marseille has absolutely no room at all amid this suffocating PSG press.
12th min: GOAL! PSG! NO WAY. Neymar just produced an acrobatic goal that seemed utterly impossible even as it was happening. Verratti — of course, after what was just said here moments ago — lifted a deft looped delivery into the penalty spot and a streaking Neymar somehow poked his foot out under pressure and dinked the ball perfectly over Pau Lopez. Incredible goal.
The first real chance of the match for either side, requiring a perfect finish to produce a goal, and Neymar made it happen.

First time PSG get behind Marseille’s flat back 5 and it’s a goal. Verratti lofts a pass over the top and a stretching Neymar loops it over Pau. Lovely goal

10th min: Marseille is doing well to shut down PSG’s midfield maestro Marco Verratti, who has 15 touches through 10 minutes, which is actually below where he usually sits. Forcing PSG out wide in the buildup.

7th min: Cengiz Under tries to go around Nuno Mendes but the PSG full-back does well to defend pace-on-pace and see the ball run out of play.
3rd min: Give Marseille credit, the visitors are compact, but they’ve tried a few times to break through the PSG press. Unsuccessfully, but it’s valiant. PSG will have its work cut out for it today trying to force its way through this Marseille bunker.
1st min: We are under way! A huge game for both teams, but far more so for the visitors who desperately need points to stay afloat in the Champions League race.
2:35 p.m.: The players are out of the tunnel! Kickoff soon between one of the more exciting rivalries in Ligue 1.

1:14 p.m.: The PSG squad has arrived at the stadium looking about as slick as you might expect from runaway league leaders. Another Champions League disappointment will be hard to forget until next season is underway, but Le Classique just means more than your average league match. They will be ready.

12:45 p.m.: The Marseille squad has made the trip to the French capital and they are confident of a key result. Any points from this match would be critical in the Champions League race, as even a draw would put the Olympiens — at least for now — out of reach in second place.

PSG vs. Marseille lineups
PSG have a number of players in the treatment room, but few are significant enough to affect the starting lineup.
The unavailable list for Le Classique includes Leandro Paredes and Julian Draxler who are both done for the season, while Ander Herrera, Ismael Gharbi, Layvin Kurzawa and Abdou Diallo are all out for today’s match.
However, more importantly, goalkeeper Keylor Navas should return for this match and could be chosen in favor of struggling Gianluigi Donnarumma, while Angel Di Maria is fit again and Marquinhos should return after being rested last time out.
The front three of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar are all fit and finally firing on all cylinders, but sadly that has come too late in the season to have an effect on the European stage.
PSG projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Navas (GK) — Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Mendes — Pereira, Gueye, Verratti – Messi, Mbappe, Neymar.
PSG subs (11): (Lineups released one hour prior to kickoff)
Marseille talisman Dimitri Payet scored in the Europa League second leg against PAOK this week but should be ready for this big match. Bamba Dieng, Boubacar Kamara and Gerson missed that game through suspension, while coach Sampaoli was also absent due to a ban, but they will all return for domestic competition.
However, Leonardo Balerdi and Konrad de la Fuente are out for the season with injuries, while Arkadiusz Milik has a hamstring problem and is unlikely to be fit for this trip.
Marseille projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Mandanda (GK) — Rongier, Saliba, Caleta-Car, Peres — Guendouzi, Kamara, Gerson — Under, Dieng, Payet
Marseille subs (11): (Lineups released one hour prior to kickoff)

PSG are understandably heavy favourites at home, but Le Classique is a closer contest than the odds suggest.
First off, as suggested above, there’s far more riding on this match for Marseille than PSG, and we’ve seen before how quickly PSG can crumble under even small amounts of adversity.
Second, this Marseille team can defend incredibly well. Since the start of the new year, Marseille have conceded over 1.0 expected goals (xG) to an opponent in league play just three times, and one of those was just barely, a 1.02 xG concession to 13th placed Reims. Marseille have the league’s joint-best defence in terms of goals conceded, level with today’s opponents, and the third-best defence by expected goals against (xGA).
After holding PSG to a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture (despite, admittedly, the Ligue 1 leaders putting up over 2.0 xG), the Parisians will have to bring the firepower to find a way through the Marseille back line.
It’s been nearly 10 years since Marseille won at Parc des Princes, so shading all the way towards Marseille on the moneyline would be foolhardy even if the visitors come away with a famous win, and considering the aforementioned Marseille back line the over is risky as well, but taking the Olympiens on the spread would be a smart choice in what could be a tight affair.
Pick: Marseille +1.5
Prediction: PSG 2-1 Marseille
