Ex-South African rugby star Pedrie Wannenburg killed as car ‘hit by teen fleeing police’

Ex-South Africa rugby union star Pedrie Wannenburg has died after he was reportedly hit by a teenage suspect fleeing police.

The former Sprinbok player was flown to hospital, where he died of his injuries aged just 41. His wife, Evette, and kids Francois and Isabelle were also in the vehicle but survived without serious injuries. 

The incident reportedly occurred in the US on Friday (April 22) during a high-speed police chase which ended in a multi-vehicle collision. News reports in Harris County, Texas, claim a deputy had tried to pull over a 16-year-old, only for the car to speed away and lead to a chase.

The teen suspect ended up crashing into the back of Wannenburg’s car near an intersection. His son is reportedly undergoing treatment, while the driver and two passengers of the suspect vehicle were also taken to hospital.

Back-row forward Wannenburg represented South Africa 20 times between 2002 and 2007. He was mostly recently acting as an assistant coach at Austin Elite in the North American Major League Rugby competition, having moved there during his playing career.

He previously represented the Bulls in South Africa, where he became a legend after more than a century of appearances. Wannenburg also played for Ulster and Castres, with former teammates now offering their condolences.

Ex-Ulster teammate Stephen Ferris wrote on Twitter: “Extremely sad news to wake up to this morning. Pedrie was a legend of the game and one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Thoughts are with his wife Evette and his young kids.”

Former Golden Lions coach Eugene Eloff wrote on Facebook: “I am shattered.. have no words. Just heard that my friend Pedrie Wannenburg passed away in a car accident. His family was in the car with him.

“Devastating news RIP wonderful man..

“You will be missed so much. My heart goes out to Evett and the kids. Keeping you in my heart and prayers.”
