TFC Limited sensitises students on environmental responsibilities

The Tema Fuel Company (TFC) Limited is to sensitize students on the environment to enable them to serve as change agents for the government’s Green Ghana Tree Planting Campaign.

“Environmental responsibility is our duty to protect and improve our environment. An environmentally responsible individual, industry, community, or government assesses their environmental sustainability and applies this knowledge to their decision-making,” Mr Samuel Kwabla Alorvor, Head of Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental Sustainability at TFC Limited, has said.

He said as the Green Ghana Tree Planting Campaign gathered momentum, there was a need to sensitize students and pupils to act in an environmentally responsible manner.

“We want our young ones to develop such a sense of responsibility at home and apply it when they find themselves in organisations, most especially as decision-makers or even as entrepreneurs,” he told the Ghana News Agency in an interview during the tree planting exercise in Tema.

Mr Alorvor said the company wanted the students to think about the impact of their actions and inactions on the environment and minimize the damage to the planet.

He said as part of the measures, the Company planted 1,200 trees, made up of ornamental and forestry trees, as a contribution to the Green Ghana Tree Planting Campaign.

The Company planted 510 trees at strategic locations, including the Tema Senior High School.

The staff and management members of the Company also planted 100 trees at their various households, 50 trees at Chemu Senior High Technical School, 100 trees at the Tema General Hospital (TGH), 120 trees at Kpone Senior High School, 30 trees at Tema Sports Stadium, and 290 trees at the Tema Technical Institute.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the management of TFC Limited supported each of the schools and Tema General Hospital with a fuel supply worth GH¢2,000.00.

Mr Alorvor described the call to action through the Green Ghana campaign as a wake-up initiative to save the world and mankind, saying, “everyone must join the initiative to save the world and humanity.”

He said the planting of trees must be backed with conscious efforts to stop the uncontrolled felling of trees and the destruction of the vegetation.
“If as a nation, we plant more trees, it will give more oxygen in the environment to aid in the growth of humans and plants.”

Mr Alorvor said Tema Fuel Company Limited had set up a monitoring team to ensure that the trees survive, “we are not just planting but would deploy a team to regularly monitor the growth of the trees.”

Mr Naven Naicker, the Depot Manager of TFL, said the Green Ghana Project was a good initiative and emphasised the protection of the natural environment by individuals, organisations, and governments, adding “we must conserve natural resources and the existing natural environment and, where possible, repair damage and reverse trends”.

Madam Patricia Annan-Quaye, the Senior House Mistress, of Tema Senior High School, advised teachers to teach students and individuals to keep the environment green.
