Berlin/Teltow (dpa) – On the 62nd anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, Germany is commemorating the victims of the GDR border regime. Building of the Berlin Wall began on 13 August 1961, sealing Germany’s division. By the time the border was opened on 9 November 1989, at least 140 people had lost their lives at the Wall, according to the Berlin Wall Foundation.
At various events along the former border, representatives of politics and society will remember those who died or were killed while attempting to flee. Other consequences of Germany’s decades-long division will also be explored, such as the breakup of families and the lack of freedom for people in the GDR.
