Berlin (dpa) – Two Federal Armed Forces transport aircraft are taking aid supplies from the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) to the region of Libya which has been hit by catastrophic flooding. The THW is sending emergency aid to Libya in the form of 100 tents with lighting, 1000 field beds, 1000 blankets, 1000 sleeping mats and 80 generators. Germany’s Federal Development Ministry (BMZ) has made available an additional €4m to Libya as an interim measure. The BMZ has been supporting Libya since 2015 and has been able to mobilise help quickly thanks to existing structures there. Doctors and aid workers from BMZ-funded health centres in Libya are on their way to the flooded areas. The Doctors Without Borders aid organisation has sent an emergency team to the city of Darna, which has been hit very hard. German Development Minister Svenja Schulze said, “Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by the dreadful flooding in Libya. We will not leave them to deal with this catastrophe on their own, and have quickly mobilised additional funds.”
Storm Daniel caused catastrophic devastation in Libya on Sunday. The mayor of Darna said he feared that up to 20,000 people could have died in his city alone.
