The club announced on Monday that MacFarland is being promoted to general manager, with GM Joe Sakic moving into the role of president of hockey operations.
MacFarland, 52, has been with the Avalanche for seven seasons.
Sakic recently won the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.
