Gary Rowett has left his role as Millwall manager – just three days shy of clocking up four years in charge.
The Lions have announced a mutual parting of the ways with the experienced boss, who was appointed as Neil Harris’ successor on October 21, 2019.
Rowett, 49, was the second-longest serving manager in the Championship behind Coventry’s Mark Robins and eighth in English football’s top four tiers.
He led Millwall to two eighth place finishes, one ninth place and also 11th.
Last season the Lions looked set to secure a Championship play-off spot on the final day but after leading 3-1 at half-time they lost 4-3 to Blackburn Rovers to dash their prospects of a top-six finish.
“We greatly appreciate Gary’s efforts throughout his time in charge and he departs with the best wishes of everybody connected with the club,” said Millwall chairman James Berylson.
“While my time working directly with Gary has been short, I have thoroughly enjoyed all our interactions and feel that he leaves us having enhanced the club’s on-pitch status during four successful years in charge.”
Assistant manager Adam Barrett will take charge for Saturday’s match at Preston North End – a lunchtime kick off screened live on Sky Sports – with former Birmingham and West Brom defender Paul Robinson, first-team coach, assisting him.
Rowett, who managed the Lions 197 times, issued a statement on the club’s website. He said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the fans for all their support during my time at the club. The atmosphere they create is truly unique.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed being manager of Millwall and depart with a feeling that the club have progressed during my tenure. As is sometimes the case in football, the time just feels right to part ways.
“I would like to thank John Berylson, James, Steve Kavanagh, Alex Aldridge, my backroom staff, and everyone behind the scenes for their hard work and support.
“Finally, I’d like to extend my gratitude to the players, who I thank for the blood, sweat, and tears they have put into their efforts. It has been a successful and enjoyable four years.”
Millwall say a “comprehensive recruitment process is already underway”.
Berylson added: “In Adam and Paul we have two excellent coaches who I know fans will really get behind during their time in caretaker charge
“They have my full support as we take the necessary time to secure the appointment which is in the best interests of the football club.”
