Frankfurt/Main (dpa) – The football associations of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands have officially presented their joint bid to host the Women’s World Cup in 2027. Under the motto “BNG2027”, which stands both for “Breaking New Ground” and for “Belgium, Netherlands, Germany”, the associations hope to beat the competition when a decision is taken next year.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz supports the bid. “It would be a big deal for us if we could co-host this World Cup”, Scholz said during a visit to the women’s national squad. The matches would be played in a compact region spanning the three countries so as to keep distances between the venues short. According to the plans, matches in Germany would take place in Dortmund, Cologne, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The three association presidents, Bernd Neuendorf from Germany, Pascale van Damme from Belgium and Just Spee from the Netherlands, stated: “We are confident that we will offer the participating teams and fans from around the world a tournament of incomparable quality – unique experiences and exciting games at the highest international level.”
A decision on the applications is to be taken at the Congress of the World Football Association FIFA in Bangkok on 17 May 2024. The German-Dutch-Belgian application will be competing with Brazil and South Africa, as well as with a joint bid from the USA and Mexico – the latter two having already been chosen to jointly host the Men’s World Cup in 2026 together with Canada. Germany will be hosting the men’s EURO 2024 championship next year.
