CSA release statement on Bavuma’s injury and chances of him playing in semis

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma faces a race against time to be fit for the Cricket World Cup semi-final match against Australia on Thursday.

The 33-year-old sustained a right hamstring strain during Friday’s Cricket World Cup match against Afghanistan in Ahmedabad.

Cricket South Africa on Saturday said Bavuma has “showed an improvement overnight” as per ESPN.

It was speculated that the struggling captain could go for a scan.

Bavuma could miss the rest of the tournament

“Proteas captain Temba Bavuma sustained a right hamstring strain during the match against Afghanistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday night,” CSA said in a statement.

“He was assessed by the Proteas medical team today and showed an improvement overnight. He will continue to be monitored and managed by the medical team.”

Bavuma has struggled to find form in this World Cup and averages 20 with the bat.

CSA has not confirmed whether the 33-year-old batman will go for a scan this weekend or not but should Bavuma fail to recover in time, Reeza Hendricks will be the obvious choice to replace him.

The Proteas face Australia this Thursday in Kolkata as they look to reach their first ever World Cup final.
