Abu Dhabi (dpa) – Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has appealed to the Arab Gulf states to work together with the West on a peace solution for the people in Israel and the Palestinian territories. “Everyone has an interest in peace and in living in dignity. Everyone has a right to live in peace and dignity,” said Baerbock after talks with the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in Abu Dhabi.
This applied equally to Israelis and Palestinians, she said, adding that it was also an aspiration “that is shared by the vast majority of people in the region. They want their children to have a peaceful future, just like everyone all over the world,” said the Minister. The attack by the Islamist group Hamas on Israel had shaken an entire region’s sense of security, said Baerbock. “Our shared message from all moderates to the extremist actors in the region is very clear: don’t add fuel to the fire.”
Baerbock praised the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which had increased its support for the Palestinian relief organisation UNRWA, she said, and was also seeking to get involved in caring for the wounded from Gaza. “The United Arab Emirates in particular are a bridge between the different worlds” – not least because they had maintained full diplomatic relations with Israel since 2020, said Baerbock. “The UAE has recognised that direct interaction and dialogue ensures greater security and prosperity for everyone,” said the Foreign Minister. Following her visit to the United Arab Emirates, Baerbock will also visit Saudia Arabia and Israel on her third trip to the Middle East since the Hamas attack on Israel.
