Winger, D’Margio Wright-Phillips has signed a new two-year contract at Stoke City until June 2024, with option for a further season.
Wright-Phillips began his career playing for his hometown club – Manchester City where he failed to graduate into the first-team squad after six years rising through their youth ranks.
The 20 year-old winger who is the son of Shaun Wright-Phillips and grandson of ex two-time FA Cup winner, Ian Wright, joined the Potters in February 2021 following his departure from Man City but mainly played within their Under-21s team of whom he scored for on his debut in a 2-1 win away at Burnley.
Wright-Phillips eventually broke through into the first-team in January as he started in their 2-0 victory over Leyton Orient in the Third Round of last season’s FA Cup, before making his league debut in a 2-0 away win at Hull in the Sky Bet Championship a week later.
Across the second-half of last season, Wright-Phillips proceeded to make 12 senior appearances in total during which he scored once – which came in the opening minute of an eventual 3-2 home loss to Fulham in only his third senior match in late January.
His performances overall proved impressive enough to persuade Stoke to tie him down with a new two-year contract until June 2024, albeit with the option of a further one-season extension until June 2025 if both club and player agree terms.
Speaking about his decision to sign the new contract offer, Wright-Phillips commented: “I’m very happy to be here and I can’t wait to get the season going.”
Wright-Phillips proceeded to praise manager – Michael O’Neill and his coaching staff for their support as he continued: “Michael O’Neill has been a massive influence on me – I broke in quite quickly and he’s been like a father figure towards me.
“The coaches have been very influential too, staying out with me after training, doing shooting and other little bits that can help improve my game.”
Stoke’s Head of Football Operations, Andy Cousins added: “When D’Margio joined us from Manchester City he came in on a short-term deal because he had to prove himself but he worked really hard on that.
“He has made good progress and he’s now moving on to more of a first-team contract, which is what we feel he deserves.”
