Pop icon Madonna has revealed that she had a conversation with God during her near-death experience last year, when she was hospitalized for a serious bacterial infection.
The 65-year-old singer opened up about the ordeal during her Celebration World Tour show in Los Angeles on Monday, where she performed to a sold-out crowd at the Kia Forum.
Madonna told her fans that she developed a severe bacterial infection on June 24, 2023, which led to a four-day coma and a several-day stay in the ICU.
“I have fallen off a lot of horses and broken a lot of bones. I have a titanium hip. I mean, the list goes on and on, but nothing can stop me… This summer I had a surprise. It’s called a near-death experience,” she told the crowd.
Details surrounding the hospitalization remain unclear, but Madonna elaborated on a powerful encounter she believes she had while in a medically induced coma.
Admitting that the experience was “pretty scary,” she shared that her assistant told her, “the first word I said was ‘No’.
“I’m pretty sure that was God saying to me, ‘Do you want to come?’” she stated, referring to the possibility of passing away. “And I’m like, ‘No, I don’t want to come.’”
Madonna gave a shout-out to Dr. David Agus, who guided her through the crisis.
She also thanked her children who were by her side.
She said,“My children are the ones that really helped me pull through, because they worked so hard and… I didn’t want to let them down. So I just set a date and that date became a reality. And I didn’t wanna disappoint my fans. I never do.”
Madonna said that the experience changed her perspective on life and made her appreciate every moment.
She then launched into her hit song, “Like a Prayer”, and invited the audience to sing along with her.
The singer, who has won multiple Grammy awards, began her highly anticipated tour in London at The O2 Arena in October 2023.
