Katja Dedekind has just had a cracker of a race in the women’s S13 50m freestyle, winning gold and setting a new world record.
Now, S13 is vision impairment — so she and the other two Australians in the race, Kirralee Hayes and Jenna Jones, didn’t know what had happened until they were out of the pool and speaking live on Channel Seven to Cate Campbell, who broke the news.
Cue screams and an ‘oh my god!’ from our new world record holder and gold medallist, and a big hug from her teammates.
“I didn’t think I could do that,” Katja says.
Bronze medallist Kirralee Hayes also didn’t know she had won bronze until Cate told her — cue more screams.
“I’m so happy, I just can’t believe it,” she says.
