Die US-Raumfahrtbehörde Nasa erwartet in den kommenden Monaten eine sehr helle sogenannte Nova-Explosion. Dabei handele es sich um einen Helligkeitsausbruch in dem etwa 3000 Lichtjahre entfernten Sternensystem «T Coronae Borealis», der nur etwa alle 80 Jahre vorkomme, teilte die Nasa mit.

Normalerweise sei das von der nördlichen Hemisphäre aus zwischen den Sternbildern Bärenhüter und Herkules gelegene System nicht mit bloßem Auge zu sehen. Während der Nova-Explosion aber, die ungefähr bis September erwartet werde, werde die Helligkeit des Polarsterns erreicht – und «T Coronae Borealis» wie ein heller, neuer Stern aussehen. Zuletzt sei dies 1946 geschehen.

Mehrere Tage lang mit bloßem Auge sichtbar

Das Sternensystem soll mehrere Tage lang mit bloßem Auge und etwas mehr als eine Woche lang mit einem Fernglas sichtbar sein. Es ist nach Nasa-Angaben etwa 3000 Lichtjahre von uns entfernt. Ein Lichtjahr bezeichnet die Entfernung, die Licht in einem Jahr zurücklegt – eine Strecke von 9,46 Billionen Kilometer.

«T Coronae Borealis» ist den Angaben zufolge ein Doppelsternsystem mit einem Weißen Zwerg und einem Roten Riesen. Sie seien einander so nahe, dass der Rote Riese instabil werde und beginne, seine äußeren Schichten abzustoßen. Der Weiße Zwerg sammle dieses Material auf seiner Oberfläche. Seine Atmosphäre erhitze sich in der Folge so stark, dass es zu einer thermonuklearen Reaktion komme – das sei der Ausbruch, der selbst von der Erde aus zu erkennen sei. In unserer Galaxie gebe es weitere solcher wiederkehrenden Novae.
