Chelsea are still exploring options for their new striker in the summer, which is still the priority position they are looking at.
Reports have suggested that PSG are leading this race, but it’s still a race that Chelsea are in – with many still believing that Victor Osimhen remains the priority for The Blues hierarchy.
As I have said, they’ve had a dream to sign Osimhen since they arrived at the club and took over, but the opportunity has not been there. Now, the opportunity is there this summer, but you’re going to have to drop some serious cash to land him.
His release clause will be around £115m this summer, which is a big chunk of the transfer budget at any club.
Of course, there is now all of this talk about Chelsea complying with PSR and FFP rules due to loopholes found such as selling assets between their own companies. Whether they actually end up getting away with that or not remains to be seen, I’m pretty sure that other club owners will be doing all they can to stop it. However, as of right now, it appears to be within the rules, so maybe they have just found more smart loopholes.
It still doesn’t mean we can and will be able to keep dropping huge amounts of cash on bringing in more new players. As I have said, the club want to be smarter in expenditure and have looked at different ways to do this (loan to buy/obligation, free agents, etc). We WILL still be selling players this summer regardless of what happens, and we will be smarter in what we bring in. It’s the last window of a four-window plan to rebuild the squad. So there will be at least two or three positions signed in this summer, but it’s not expected to be as crazy as past windows at the club.
Even still, there is that temptation to spend big on Osimhen, although Chelsea have been looking at ways to try and bring the fee down and also, structure the release clause. There’s been some club contacts, and plenty of agent contact.
But should Chelsea be spending out that much money on Osimhen alone, or should they go for a cheaper option?
I like Osimhen, but I’m far from convinced on him, especially for that fee.
Should Benjamin Sesko (for a now higher reported release clause of around £55m) be targeted instead?
Or should we go down a completely different route altogether and find a much cheaper option such as Serhou Guirassy, who has scored 26 goals in 27 games for Stuttgart in Bundesliga this season and who will reportedly be available for less than £15m this summer?
Or perhaps a Victor Boniface of Leverkusen, a player who would be available for around £50m this summer, should be targeted?
Ivan Toney, also still on our list, I understand would be available for around £40m this summer – Brentford will likely push for a bit more.
Viktor Gyokeres is also still one to watch, and he has a release clause of around £85m, which is a lot – but he is a prolific goalscorer.
So what direction should Chelsea take?

Personally, I am still very split on this, but my instinct tells me to avoid £115m on Osimhen and to go for a cheaper option. I’d like to see an experienced option as well even if I do like Sesko, and one who has the physical presence and stature to be able to hold the ball up and be an aerial beast as well as a bit of a fox in the box.
