Hungary face Switzerland in Cologne, Germany, as both teams commence their UEFA Euro 2024 campaigns.
Depending upon the result of Germany’s opening Group A match against Scotland, victory could see Hungary or Switzerland go top.
Team News
Hungary have no injury concerns to report after their 3-0 friendly victory over Israel.
Switzerland too have no injury issues after their 1-1 friendly draw against Austria.
When is Kick-Off?
Hungary meet Switzerland at RheinEngerieStadion, Cologne, at 3pm CEST (2pm UK Time), live on ITV1 in the UK.
Stat Attack
- This is Hungary’s first clash against Switzerland at a major European tournament.
- Switzerland lost their only previous meeting against Hungary in a major tournament, which came in a 2-0 loss at 1938 FIFA World Cup in the Quarter-Finals stage.
- Hungary have kept three clean sheets in four matches in 2024 (W3, L1).
- Switzerland have lost one of their last 14 matches coming into this tournament (W6, D7, L1).
Prediction
With just two defeats in their last 20 matches in all competitions and goals in 18 games across that run, Hungary certainly can’t be underestimated because they are a creative danger that oppositional teams will need to be wary of at all times – especially given their momentum.
Switzerland meanwhile seem to be in bit of a rut with just three wins in their last 11 matches but they have lost just once in that period, so it will be interesting to see if they can rediscover their spark now in tournament mode – particularly with clean sheets in three of four games in 2024.
My first instinct when writing this preview was a scrappy draw and to be honest, I do still feel like that will be the case unless Hungary hit their stride early.
Prediction: Hungary 1-1 Switzerland
