Wanna make the most of your day when you travel Luxembourg City?

Well, good news—I know this city way better than the other places I discuss in my blog.

Yup– I’m a local of the area. As a local, I spend almost every second day in Luxembourg City, and I can’t wait to share my highlights with you!

Despite its small size, there are plenty of things to do in Luxembourg in one day.

Spoiler alert: I’ll help you explore all the city’s highlights within 24 hours. Waste no minute of your Luxembourg trip and let’s dive in!

Overview: Luxembourg in one day

  1. Have a hearty breakfast at Café By Oberweis
  2. Scavenger Hunt in the Old Town
  3. Stroll through Parc de Ville
  4. Cross the iconic Adolphe Bridge
  5. Go on an evening walk at Corniche

1. Breakfast in Luxembourg City

coffee and pastries, luxembourg in one daycoffee and pastries, luxembourg in one day

There are a lot of incredible places to visit in Luxembourg in one day.

But before you visit any of them, remember to start your Luxembourg day trip with a hearty breakfast.

This city offers plenty of delicacies that will impress your taste buds and eyes and a camera gallery.

My go-to breakfast stop has always been Café By Oberweis.

This cafe offers all kinds of treats, including pastries, cakes, chocolate, and pie. All equally delicious, but I’ve always loved their cakes most.

The Chocolate House is another popular breakfast stop (though I usually visit it after lunch).

It’s renowned for its Belgian and French chocolates (over 60 kinds), tasty cakes, and prime location across from the Grand Ducal Palace.

These two breakfast shops are conveniently located in Old Town, the next stop on your Luxembourg in a day exploration!

2. Explore the Old Town

If you only have 24 hours in Luxembourg, the best first stop is always the Old Town.

It offers multiple historically essential landmarks that are all a sight to behold.

The best part?

They’re all just several minutes (on foot) away from each other!

I recommend spending an hour or two just exploring the town by taking a stroll (with a touch of picture-taking).

Feel free to follow wherever your steps lead you. I love doing this whenever I visit a new city.

But, if you want to be time-efficient (which may be necessary if you only have 1 day in Luxembourg to explore), here’s a quick mini-itinerary for the Old Town:

9:00 AM: Start at the Grand Ducal Palace.

9:20 AM: Walk for about 5 minutes to reach Place Guillaume II.

9:40 AM: Continue walking to the nearby Place d’Armes (try to explore nearby shops).

10:00 AM: Walk to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame (should only take 5 minutes).

Adjust the duration of each stop as needed, but make room to visit one more landmark before you start craving lunch!

Explore Luxembourg with a self-guided tour

3. Bock Casemates

Years ago, I tagged along with my friends’ Luxembourg day trip from Paris tour (for fun, haha).

Of all the locations we visited, my friends and other tourists were most fascinated by Bock Casemates.

This fascinating series of tunnels were built in the 18th century as defensive fortifications during the war.

Now, it’s one of the most popular locations where you can walk through the history of Luxembourg!

Make sure to grab a complimentary guide at the reception before entering.

Touring Bock Casemates is much more engaging when you know what the letters on the walls correspond to.

Oh, and book tickets in advance so you don’t waste time lining up!

4. Lunch in Grund

After you visit Bock Casements, it should be just the perfect time to grab lunch.

When it comes to lunch in the city, I never recommend a district other than Grund.

Many restaurants here have the best scenic views of the Alzette River.

Plus, they offer Luxembourg traditional food options that represent our food culture in the city!

My go-to restaurant in Grund has always been Bosso (I grew up eating there), but it unfortunately closed earlier this year.

Fortunately, though, there are still many fantastic dining options in Grund!

Taste and vibe-wise, I like the Um Plateau restaurant.

Try its traditional Luxembourgish charcuterie and croquette artisanales to taste the city’s culinary delights.

You may also want to dine at Bistrot de la Presse to try traditionally prepared Luxembourgish dumplings. Or, at its “neighbor,” Restaurant Um Dierfgen, for its wide selection of local dishes like feierstengszalot and tête de veau.

5. Explore the Grund District

A casual stroll after eating your fill is always satisfying.

Conveniently enough, if you eat in Grund, you’ll already be in one of the most picturesque districts in the city.

Wander through the cobblestone streets and along the Alzette River, where you’ll be surrounded by more charming historic buildings.

I’ve seen the view from this district hundreds of times already.

But I never fail to fall in love all over again whenever I revisit.

Apart from enjoying the general view of the district, I recommend dropping by the Neumünster Abbey.

It was initially used as a monastery, was later transformed into a prison in the 19th century, and was finally repurposed as a cultural venue. Talk about a complex background.

Undoubtedly, it is one of the best places to visit in Luxembourg City in one day.

6. Visit the National Museum of History and Art (MNHA)

Whether you’re exploring Luxembourg in 3 days 2 or 1, the National Museum of History and Art is always a must-visit.

It’s a one-stop destination for exploring the country of Luxembourg’s rich history and art.

You’ll find numerous artifacts, such as medieval sculpture and armor, Gallo-Roman art, ancient coins, and even a 25,000-volume library.

This museum also holds a special exhibit called “The Fortress of Luxembourg” that displays (with models, words, and images) the country’s military evolution.

Artifacts aside, I’ve always loved the paintings and other decorative arts displayed in this national museum.

So, you’ll find me here at least a couple of times a year.

7. Visit the Luxembourg City History Museum

Touring Luxembourg in one day means you’ll have the exciting chance to enjoy a back-to-back museum experience.

Don’t worry, and the two museums are different from each other.

The National Museum encompasses the country’s history.

On the other hand, the Luxembourg City History Museum focuses on the city’s history— specifically, its over 1,000 years of urban history.

This is where you can learn, through artifacts, maps, and other forms of media, how the city evolved into the architecturally beautiful and vibrant city it is today.

There are also fun animations illustrating important moments in the city’s history.

I’ve never had a “boring visit” to this history museum as there’s always something new waiting for the city’s urban planning development.

8. Stroll through Parc de Ville

Touring Luxembourg in one day wouldn’t be complete without strolling through Parc de Ville, our Municipal Park.

Hands down, it’s one of the most beautiful places in Luxembourg.

It’s a very expansive park (about 20 hectares) filled with a healthy mix of lush greens, colorful flower beds, and ponds.

Just like you’re imagining, it’s the perfect place to spend the afternoon with the hug of nature.
Especially after you’ve spent most of your day surrounded by buildings and an urban lifestyle.

Locals frequent this park to relax or exercise.

But no worries, you’re still guaranteed a peaceful stroll, as quieter spots will always be available.

If you love your experience at Parc de Ville, you should also check out Mullerthal, a nearby natural wonder.

One of my favorite things to do in Mullerthal is to hike to the viewpoints.

There, you can get a 360-degree view of the surrounding green fields while standing on top of 175 million-year-old sandstones.

It’s like having municipal park’s greeneries on steroids.

9. Adolphe Bridge

a woman in a dress overlooking an overduct and adolphe bridge over a forest in luxembourg citya woman in a dress overlooking an overduct and adolphe bridge over a forest in luxembourg city

A Luxembourg in a day trip wouldn’t feel right without crossing the iconic Adolphe Bridge.

Constructed in the 1900s, this bridge is one of the best spots to enjoy panoramic views of the city.

You can either walk on top of the bridge or through the walkway just under the top of it.

I prefer walking on top because I love having an unrestricted view of the surroundings.

But the lower deck becomes my default option when it’s raining or the weather’s too hot.

10. Dinner in Clausen

fancy table setting in clausen restaurant luxembourgfancy table setting in clausen restaurant luxembourg

The best way to gradually wrap up one day in Luxembourg City is to have dinner in Clausen.

You can get there by taking a bus from the Adolphe Bridge (fun fact: public transportation in the city is free) and walking a little more.

This district comes alive at night.

So, expect lots of crowds searching for where to have dinner, just like you!

I love exploring diverse cuisine at night, so my go-to dinner spots are restaurants like Ikki and Le Sud.

Ikki is renowned for its Japanese, European, and other Asian cuisines. There are lots of options for everyone in the group.

Le Sud, on the other hand, is my top choice for French and other European cuisines. It closes early at 10 PM.

11. Evening Walk along the Corniche

corniche luxembourg at nightcorniche luxembourg at night

One of the best things to do in Luxembourg by night is to walk along the Corniche, Europe’s most beautiful balcony.

Now, I know if you look up Corniche online, most of the images you’ll find are taken in the daylight.

But, what many don’t know is that Corniche is the most stunning at night.

When the city is illuminated at night, it looks like Luxembourg just got drenched by gold.

Corniche at night is one of the most romantic destinations I can think about in Europe.

Apart from saving the view through pictures, soak it in with your own eyes.

12. Drinks at a Rooftop Bar

wine glasses in rooftop bar in luxembourgwine glasses in rooftop bar in luxembourg

The best way to wrap up touring Luxembourg in one day is to enjoy cocktails at a rooftop bar.

Good news– there are numerous top-recommended rooftop bars in the city.

Skybar is a classic last stop of the day for tourists.

Its open terrace offers a nice view of the city skyline and is known for its great food and drinks.

However, I personally prefer L’Observatoire, the rooftop bar of Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal Hotel.

It offers a panoramic view of the city, has an amazing interior design, and serves a wide variety of drinks.

If you’re still wondering where to stay in Luxembourg City, consider the Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal Hotel.

As one of the best accommodations I’ve tried, it offers the perfect amenities to wrap up your one day in Luxembourg City comfortably.

My final thoughts on Luxembourg in one day

a view of a girl in luxembourg city with a view on adolphe bridgea view of a girl in luxembourg city with a view on adolphe bridge

I recommend exploring Luxembourg in 2 days or longer. …and definitely to venture out of the capital. The country itself has so much to offer!

That way, you can enjoy more adventures, such as my favorite things to do in Echternach.

However, as this post proves, you can still experience many highlights even if you only have a day to tour the city.

That’s why an endless number of people take a Luxembourg day trip from Brussels or any nearby city!

As always, if you want to know more about tips and tricks for traveling to Luxembourg or any of the countries I’ve been to, don’t hesitate to check out my other posts!
