Berlin (dpa) – Spain has beaten England 2:1 in the final of the European Football Championship in Germany. At Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal scored the goals for Spain. This was Spain’s fourth European Championship title, putting the country ahead of Germany, which has won the tournament three times. Cole Palmer only managed to score a temporary equaliser for England.
Spain had kicked Germany out of the championship in the quarter finals. EURO 2024 kicked off on 14 June with the opening match in Munich. Other games were held in ten cities throughout Germany. There were large fan zones at all venues where hundreds of thousands of football fans from all over Europe cheered on their teams.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser summed up the championship in very positive terms following the final in Berlin. “We experienced a wonderful festival of football in the heart of Europe, just as we had all wanted. Our country presented itself as a good host,” the minister stated. “Many images of this summer in our cities will not be forgotten.” Football cannot “of course solve the problems of our time, but it has created a common spirit during these weeks that has done us as a society good”.
