I wanted to experience summer at its best, so I went to Albufeira in August. I adored the beautiful sandy shores, wandered the historic old town, and hiked along the golden cliffs.
Known as the most vibrant town in the Algarve, Albufeira offers diverse outdoor activities, festivals, and nightlife at its peak in the sunniest month of the year.
No wonder tourists are excited to travel Algarve and spend most of their summer holidays in Albufeira.
Before the weather in Albufeira in August reaches its hottest, here are my top recommendations and tips from my summer escapades in the old fisherman’s town!

1. Relax on Praia dos Pescadores
Packed with tourists during summer, Praia dos Pescadores’ expansive and fine golden sand beach is still one of the best spots to lounge under the sun or stroll at any time of the day.
Families love this beach because it’s just down the old town, has clear and warm summer seawater, and many fun water activities like the kids’ inflatable playground.
I will never forget the impressive view of the old town and Praia dos Pescadores from Pau da Bandeira, a lookout point at the east side cliff. From the cliff, there’s an escalator going down to the beach.
As Albufeira’s main beach, amenities include wheelchair access, water sports, sunbeds, showers, toilets, and parking areas.
There’s also a square that bustles at night with bars and restaurants, where some visitors skate or hoverboard.
2. Explore Albufeira Old Town
From Praia dos Pescadores, I walked up to Albufeira’s old town. Vendor tents, outdoor dining, and live music may have created a vibrant atmosphere, but the old town never lost its historical appeal.
Passing through cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, old walls, and known landmarks, I spotted traces of Mediterranean roots and Moorish influence.
The Clock Tower at Rua Bernardino Sousa is one of the famous landmarks here.
Built over an old medieval castle wall in the 18th century, visitors climb the tower to admire a spectacular view of Albufeira.
Churches with 18th-century architecture are the old town’s hidden gems, like the Church of Sao Sebastiao and the Municipal Archaeology Museum built at the old City Hall’s site.
In summer, the old town is always busy, but I’d instead roam during the daytime than at night, when crowds are everywhere heading to parties and bars.
3. Attend the Albufeira August Festivals
There are so many things to do in Albufeira and attending the festivals in August was one of the memorable experiences I had during my stay.
The Sardine Festival, usually held around the second week of August, is held at Olhos de Agua, a parish near Albufeira.
A sought-after occasion in Albufeira, it showcases a variety of sardines, wine, and music.
In mid-August, hundreds of people attend the Festival of Our Lady of the Oracle, a significant religious tradition in Albufeira, which highlights a long procession observed with magnificent fireworks over Praia dos Pescadores.
I also had a great time at the Albufeira Municipal Holiday celebration on the 20th. It started with a water sports competition in the morning, then a concert at night and fabulous fireworks at midnight.

4. Take a Boat Trip to Benagil Caves
Among the best places in Algarve, Benagil Cave is one of the most photographed and visited. Albufeira offers boat tours to bring you to this magnificent attraction.
Aside from fewer crowds, the morning sunlight creates an ethereal appeal in this cave, so I suggest you book an early morning tour. Late afternoon is also ideal unless you prefer a sunset cruise to get there.
Tours to this famous cave may include dolphin-watching that lasts up to 3 hours between the coast of Albufeira and Carvoeiro. It passes through stunning rock formations and hidden caves.
If you’re looking for a little speed, a speedboat tour to the cave that stops by the pristine beaches in the Algarve, like Praia da Marinha, is a cool option.
Kayaks and SUPs are popular in Albufeira, especially for the adventurous.
5. Enjoy Water Sports at Praia da Oura
Located on the eastern side of Albufeira, Praia da Oura is more than just a hangout place for partygoers from the nearby “The Strip.”
It’s a perfect village resort for exploring exciting water sports for all skill levels.
There’s an adventure center in the middle of the beach where you may sign up for parasailing, jet skiing, jet boating, and more.
Most hotels here can accommodate water adventures, but Ski Molhaldo is one of the most popular watersports rentals.
I didn’t let this opportunity pass to try flyboarding, a recent watersport addition to the beach. With boots attached to a jet-powered board, I lifted in the air.
I only flew with a low attitude as a beginner, but it was one of the most amazing things to do in Algarve that I tried.
6. Visit Zoomarine Algarve
A marine-themed park that the whole family and marine enthusiasts will love, Zoomarine Algarve highlights marine life, thrilling park rides, and a wave pool to beat the heat of Albufeira weather in August.
One of the big shows in Zoomarine is the dolphins’ synchronized performances. Some visitors sign up for an interactive experience to swim with them, which is truly memorable.
I found the zoological presentations of exotic birds, reptiles, and mammals interesting as they provided facts about the creatures’ distinct behaviors and abilities.
To make the most of your day in Zoomarine, engage first with activities you came for and enjoy, and don’t forget to bring extra clothes whether you plan to swim or not.
7. Experience Albufeira’s Nightlife
Known as the liveliest in the Algarve, Albufeira is known for its countless dazzling clubs and bars, which are mostly concentrated in an avenue called “the Strip.”
Among the famous clubs of Albufeira in Algarve, Club Heaven is patronized by locals and tourists for its cheap drinks, excellent international DJs, and live acts.
If your group wants to dance the night away with a great selection of dance music, head to Kiss Disco Club.
I’m always on the lookout for special events themed to Albufeira weather. August sunset parties and boat parties are some of the parties hosted by prominent clubs in the city.
Albufeira is a safe town, but like any travel destination, you should follow these safety tips: Stay on well-lit streets, look out for each other in your group, and use reputable ride-sharing services.
8. Discover the Albufeira Marina
Just a 10-minute walk from the old town, Albufeira Marina boasts 480 moorings for recreational boats and a tourist complex with unique places to stay in Algarve such as neat Albufeira villas and colorful apartments.
The marina’s picturesque waterfront has shops, restaurants, and bars.
I remember walking past cute souvenir shops and boutiques before I dined at Tasca Portuguesa to try Portuguese cuisine and some wines.
Aside from watersports and boat rentals, the boatyard offers sunset boat and fishing trips. Bowling, go-kart races, and segway tours are some recreational activities that await you.

9. Go Hiking in the Algarve Hills
Albufeira’s surrounding hills, cliffs, and natural parks are the best spots to discover stunning coastal views.
The 5.8 km loop trail I hiked at Caminho da Baleeira Nature Reserve was a perfect adventure.
Moderately challenging, it took me through Albufeira’s remote and beautiful beaches—Arrifes, São Rafael, and Ponta Grande.
If you prefer an easy trail, the Coelha Beach Trail leads to dirt paths through lush coastal forests.
But for the ultimate hiking experience, the Albufeira to Portimão trail is a popular backpacking and hiking route with inspiring landscape scenery and various fauna and flora along the way.
When hiking in Algarve trails, it’s best to wear quick-dry clothing that absorbs moisture from the skin.
Also, make sure to bring water and energy bars because, more often than not, these routes don’t have establishments around to buy them.
10. Taste Local Cuisine at a Food Market
There are many ways to immerse yourself in Albufeira’s culture, and one of them is to discover traditional food and shop at traditional markets.
From street and fair local markets to district and municipal markets, there’s a vibrant array of fresh produce, seafood, and regional delicacies.
One that attracts me is Albufeira’s Mercado Municipal. This market is not big, but it’s a treat for food lovers.
I tasted many unique traditional dishes here, such as salted cod, homemade cheese, hot sausage, and pastéis de nata.
Other municipal markets where you can find the best local foods are Mercado Municipal d’Areias de São João and Mercado Municipal de Ferreiras.
Weekends are the best days to shop and spot local cuisine as more stalls open. I recommend bringing cash, as only a few vendors take cards.
My Final Thoughts on Albufeira in August
With a distinct character, Albufeira is among the prime town resorts in the Algarve, and I would love to stay there in August.
