This 1,200-mile trail passes through some of the state’s most popular (and beautiful) landscapes.
Those include the dense and well-maintained forests like the Kettle Moraine State Forest and the Devil’s Lake State Park. During winter, these areas transform into snow-covered wonderlands!
My favorite access point to this trail is the Devil’s Lake State Park.
Its 11-mile section of the Ice Age Trail is perfect for a day hike (up to 6 hours if you enjoy the views like me).
I’ve also tried starting at the Scuppernong Trail in the Southern Kettle Moraine or the 2-mile loop of the Lodi Marsh Trail for an easy winter hike.
Almost every section of the Ice Age Trail offers the same incredible glacial formations, rolling hills, and peaceful natural beauty.
So, just choose whichever section of the trail you’re interested in! You’re guaranteed to be immersed in one of the best free things to do in winter Wisconsin!
When hiking, remember to dress warmly, wear sturdy, winter-appropriate footwear, and, of course, check trail conditions before starting your hike.

There are plenty of exciting winter events in Wisconsin.
So, you’ll experience the stunning landscapes and outdoor fun and the vibrant local culture of the towns you visit!
These winter festivals often feature parades, ice carvings, concerts, and family-friendly activities.
Let me share some of the best ones we’ve attended.
The historic winter festival of Cedarburg, held mid-February, is the most exciting festival we enjoyed with incredible ice carving and lots of community contests.
Hudson’s Hot Air Affair, held the first week of February, was heartwarming.
And then, there’s the Kickapoo Valley Reserve Winter Festival that’s perfect for families to make unforgettable memories during the of the year!
These winter festivals are completely free. But don’t forget to bring cash for delicious food or tickets to activities that catch your eye!
3. Visit Madison’s Olbrich Botanical Gardens (Outdoor Gardens)
Most people visit Madison’s Olbrich Botanical Gardens in the warmer months.
However, these gardens have their charm in the colder season!
Sure, there will be fewer flowers in bloom, but the outdoor landscape is still as beautiful as it is in the spring or summer.
The cold might make you appreciate the indoor conservatory of the gardens even more.
One step into this indoor space will awaken your senses (in a good way), and the warmth will make you forget it’s still winter outside!
Hands down, one of the best things to do in Wisconsin in winter indoors (and it only costs a dollar to enter, too!).
When I’m spending winter in Madison, I try to visit this garden when a Holiday Express Model Train & Flower Show is scheduled to add extra value to my visit.

4. Explore Kohler-Andrae State Park’s Winter Dunes
During winter, Kohler-Andrae State Park’s iconic dunes along Lake Michigan’s shoreline become snow-dusted and frozen, creating an entirely new landscape.

Alternatively, you can explore the easy yet scenic trails winding through and around the park!
The Cordwalk-Boardwalk Trail is a classic. It’s right by the lake and dunes, so you won’t need to go out of your way to enjoy the view.
If you want a more forest-dense view, you can also try the Black River Trails Loops and Woodland Dunes Nature Trail. Both trails only take about 1–2 hours to complete, making them perfect for day trips!

6. Milwaukee Christmas Lights Tour
One of our go-to romantic winter getaways in Wisconsin is to experience the Milwaukee Christmas Lights Tour.
Milwaukee’s downtown lights up from November to January.
So, just arrive by the time darkness hits, and you’ll have a romantic winter in Milwaukee without spending anything!
Enjoy shows, photo ops with Santa, and many other attractions while visiting Milwaukee’s iconic landmarks, such as Cathedral Square Park and Pere Marquette Park, all year round.
For the least amount of stress, I highly recommend booking private Christmas lights tours that’ll ensure you see the most beautiful landmarks and light displays.
Set aside cash for delicious food and souvenirs, just in case anything catches your eye!
7. Tour the Wisconsin State Capitol
Still looking for free things to do in winter in Wisconsin? Just tour the State Capitol, one of the most beautiful spots in the entire country!
This activity is a classic all year round but shines even brighter during winter.
On top of exploring the inside of Wisconsin’s Capitol—where crucial decisions are made, you’ll also see the annual 30-ft Holiday tree that the Capitol puts up!

Booking audio tours are actual tours, and it is definitely one of the best free things to do in winter in Wisconsin.
Unfortunately, the observation deck was closed the last time we visited during winter. But weather permitting, it may be open again to offer a stunning bird’ s-eye view of the town!
8. Explore Cave Point County Park (Door County)
If you’ve been to Cave Point County Park before, you’ll know that it can get hectic in the summer.
Thousands enjoy the beach and book kayak tours in the warmer months.
So, pretty much, winter’s the best opportunity to explore the lake’s shore and experience its beauty yourself!
Seeing frozen cliffs and icy waves up close was mesmerizing, and nothing is more relaxing than ice fishing with your loved ones for entire afternoons.
You can even hop on sled rides or rent a snowmobile if your budget permits.
I’ve been to many Wisconsin winter getaways for couples, but our trip to Cave Point County Park still sticks in my mind. It’s like you’ve rented an exclusive frozen resort without spending a dime on the experience!

We experienced this once during the Miller Brewery tour before the pandemic.

This means you’re paying for the goodies you consume, and the tour of the facility and brewing process itself is free! (Girl’s math, I know).

Just visit Tenney Park in Madison, bring your own skates, and if the rinks are open, you can skate to your heart’s content within hours!
If you’re into hockey, there’s also a rink exclusively designed for playing the sport!
Will there be skates and hockey sticks for rent? Absolutely!
The hourly rate (after the first hour) is as low as $2 per hour. That translates to being free, considering you’re on vacation!

Just remember that the Tenney Park rinks are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and may be closed on days when rinks aren’t frozen enough to skate safely.
